Metals and ores in the Neolithic period

INTRODUCTION
When inquiring into the beginnings of metallurgy, it is necessary to look into certain techniques in everyday use in lithic societies, since the use of metals arose out of the experiences of lithic peoples with metallic materials. The use of red oxide of iron in ritual and funerary practice is well known over a wide area from the earliest times. Neolithic people also decorated walls with it, and at Eridu and Susa pieces of hematite were used for burnished pottery by about 4000 BC. The greens and blues of copper minerals would certainly appeal, and their use as cosmetics in Egypt and Mesopotamia is well attested. In Crete, small pieces of azurite were discovered in a habitation layer dated to c. 6000 BC.
There is little doubt that when the neolithic pottery stage was reached, green minerals were used for decorating pottery; their instability would soon be discovered for, unlike the red oxides of iron, copper-base minerals turn black when heated under oxidizing conditions.
The effect of reducing conditions in producing globules of metallic lead during the firing of lead glazes is well known, and one wonders whether smelting could have been discovered in this way. There is no evidence for this, but the fact that enclosed kilns, in which sufficiently reducing conditions would be possible, were not known until the Copper Age might suggest that such an accident was responsible for the origin of copper smelting
